Accelerated Reader Summer Program
This summer St. Ignatius Loyola will be offering an incentive to students in grades 2 through 8 who participate
in our reading program using Accelerated Reader™ (AR™).  Your child will soon discover that reading can be a
fun and engaging summer activity.  By taking quizzes on books, your child will experience a sense of
accomplishment, motivating him or her to keep reading all summer long.

Read a minimum of eight (8) books at or above reading / grade level and take eight (8) online tests in the
library.  Earn a FREE dress down day for the 2010 – 2011 school year for every 8 online quizzes passed.  The
student MUST achieve a score of 80% or higher for the quiz to qualify for the dress down coupon.  The students
may take tests in the library during normal library hours beginning Monday, June 21 through Friday, August 27,
2010.  The tests MUST be completed during this time frame to qualify for the dress down day.  Summer reading
required reading tests may also be taken during this time frame.

The routine is simple.

        Help your child select a book using the “Five Finger Rule” (see below) to quickly assess whether the book
is at an appropriate level.
        Find time for reading practice.  Make reading a priority and encourage your child to read at least 20
minutes per day.
        After your child finishes a book, take him to the school to take a quiz.
        A quiz typically takes less than 10 minutes.

FIVE – FINGER RULE

1)        The “Five – Finger Rule” is a simple technique for checking if a book is at the right book level for your
child to read independently.  Follow these steps with your child:
        Have your child read one page from anywhere in the book.
        Each time he or she comes to a word he or she doesn’t know, hold up a finger.
        If you’re holding up three or fewer fingers when he or she is done reading the page, the book should be
at the right book level for he or she to read independently.
        If you’re holding up four or five fingers, this book may be too difficult for your child to read on his or her
own.  Either read this book with your child or encourage him or her to select another book.
        If you’re holding up six or more fingers, this book is too difficult.  Help your child select another more
appropriate book.
        Teach your child to use the “Five – Finger Rule” when self – selecting books.
